The Zambian student, Lemehani Nathan Nyirenda, who had previously served a sentence in a Russian prison, died during the war in Ukraine. It was reported the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Stanley Kakubo. The deceased was engaged in nuclear engineering at the Moscow Institute of Engineering and Physics in the Russian Federation.
“Through the Embassy of the Republic of Zambia in Moscow, the ministry immediately began verifying this information. It has been established that Mr. Nyirenda did indeed die on September 22, 2022 in Ukraine. His body is now in Rostov, soon to be sent to Zambia.
According to Stanley Kakubo, in April 2020, Nathan Nyirenda violated the laws of the Russian Federation and was subsequently sentenced to nine years and six months in prison. The minister did not specify what the student was convicted of.
“In connection with this event, the Government of Zambia has appealed to the Russian authorities to urgently provide information on the circumstances under which a Zambian citizen, serving a sentence in a prison in Moscow, could have been recruited by the FSB in Ukraine and subsequently lost his life you are.”
