A foreign arms smuggler, a native of one of the countries of Central Asia, who has been hiding for almost 5 years from the investigation for organizing a transnational channel for the illegal sale of small arms through the territory of Ukraine, has been detained in Chernivtsi region. This was announced by the press center of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
As it turned out, already in 2018, law enforcement officers discovered an underground gunman and notified him of suspicion of committing a crime. The court then ordered him to remain in custody, but later changed its decision to house arrest. Taking advantage of this, the suspect escaped from justice and hid for a long time in the territory of Bukovina, for which he bought a house in one of the settlements as a mannequin and tried to change his appearance.
Despite this, SBU officers still followed and detained the offender at the place of his temporary stay.
The question of the additional qualification of the actions of the detainee, who was previously notified of suspicion under Art. 201 (“Smuggling”) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Her sanction provides for a sentence of 12 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.
